Painting textured wood grain kitchen cabinets — bad idea?

Advice

Hi all,

I’ve got kitchen cabinet doors with a kind of wood grain effect on them. They’re not smooth — there are slight dimples/divots in the grain texture.

I’d like to paint them a solid colour, but I’m not sure whether that’s going to look decent or whether the grain texture will still show through and make it look obviously DIY/badly painted.

I’m not necessarily after a perfect factory-smooth finish, but I also don’t want it to look like I’ve just slapped paint over fake wood grain.

Has anyone done this before? Did you just clean, sand, prime and paint, or did you need to fill the grain/texture first? Also interested in what primer/paint people would recommend for kitchen doors, especially if they’re laminate or coated MDF rather than real wood.

Any tips or “don’t do what I did” advice very welcome.

Thanks!
