NordVPN kills internet connection on hotel WiFi while traveling. Works again when Kill Switch is off. How do I fix this properly?
I’m traveling internationally and having repeat issues with NordVPN on hotel WiFi.
A few days ago in Paris, my Windows laptop connected to the hotel WiFi and had a valid local IP/gateway, but the internet stopped working after a couple minutes. I could ping the hotel router/gateway, but ping 8.8.8.8 returned “General failure” and DNS lookups failed. Eventually I found that NordVPN’s Kill Switch was still enabled even though I was not connected to the VPN. Turning Kill Switch off restored the internet.
Now I’m in Montenegro and I’m seeing similar behavior again. Hotel WiFi works normally until NordVPN gets involved. Once NordVPN is enabled or its protection features are active, connectivity becomes unreliable or stops. If I disable NordVPN/Kill Switch, the hotel WiFi works again.
Setup:
Windows laptop
NordVPN installed
Using hotel WiFi/captive portal networks while traveling
VPN disconnected does not always mean the internet works
Kill Switch appears to block traffic even when I’m not connected to VPN
Phone internet works fine
Problem seems local to the Windows laptop/NordVPN configuration
What I’m trying to figure out:
What NordVPN settings should I disable or change so hotel WiFi/captive portals work reliably?
Should Kill Switch be off entirely when using hotel WiFi?
Is Threat Protection / Web Protection known to interfere with hotel WiFi or captive portals?
Should I change VPN protocol, for example NordLynx vs OpenVPN TCP/UDP?
Is there a clean way to reset NordVPN’s network adapters without constantly breaking WiFi?
Are there specific Windows adapter/settings I should check after NordVPN causes “General failure” on pings?
I’m not trying to bypass hotel WiFi login or anything like that. I just want NordVPN to stop killing the connection when I’m on normal hotel WiFi while traveling.
Any practical step by step fix would be appreciated.
