✅ Block your SIM card through your mobile operator
✅ Report the phone on the Government of India's CEIR portal

This prevents criminals from receiving OTPs and accessing your accounts.
STEP 3: Block the Phone Through CEIR
India's Department of Telecommunications operates the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR).
Website:
You can:
- Block the IMEI nationally
- Prevent usage on Indian mobile networks
- Track recovery status
- Unblock the device if recovered
You'll typically need:
- Mobile number
- Device IMEI
- Purchase invoice (if available)
- Police complaint number
Find your IMEI: Dial *#06# (before losing the device) or check the box/invoice.
STEP 4: Protect Your Money
Immediately change passwords for:
- Google Account
- Apple ID
- Email accounts
- Banking apps
- UPI apps (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, etc.)
If banking apps were logged in:
- Contact your bank
- Temporarily disable mobile banking if required
- Monitor transactions carefully
STEP 5: File a Police Complaint
Visit the nearest police station or use your state's online portal.
Keep copies of:
- FIR / CSR acknowledgement
- IMEI number
- Purchase invoice
- CEIR complaint number
These documents are often required for:
- Insurance claims
- Device recovery
- IMEI blocking requests
What If You Find the Phone Later?
If your device is recovered:
- Contact your telecom provider to reactivate your SIM.
- Log in to CEIR and request IMEI unblocking.
- Verify that no unauthorized apps or accounts were added.
- Change important passwords again.
Common Mistake People Make
Many people know their phone number but have no proof that the phone actually belongs to them.
Keep these safely:
- Purchase invoice
- IMEI number
- Box serial number
- Warranty registration
- Google/Apple account linked to the device
If someone asks you to prove ownership after recovery, these documents can make all the difference.
