Don't get me wrong. They're absolutely beautiful but there's no way to sugarcoat how badly the 100 Goldback failed. Before the 100 was available, Goldback's largest denomination was a 50, and had they stuck to that then they'd be in a much better place today. The 50 denomination is still weak as a stand alone product but the 100 is a 1/10th oz bullion product which is a domain that has been dominated by small and cheap coins.

This set up the 100 Goldback to be unfavorably compared against the same tenth ounce coins. Sure, Goldbacks are cheap at the other end, the basic one Goldback is the cheapest way to own a 1/1,000th of an ounce but if the 100 isn't a good deal on it's own then that casts a negative shadow on the whole program.

Tenth ounce coins only run around 15-25% over spot most of the time. A tenth ounce Goldback at 92% was comically bad and plain for everyone to see. In fact, this comparison remains the top post about Goldbacks on all of Reddit.

The 100 Goldback had a run time of just 15 months. The PR was so terrible that Goldback was basically forced to pull it. Few people mourned the death of the 100. Goldback would've been better off if they could've predicted that the 100 would be judged not as a part of an interchangeable system, but as a stand-alone product against 1/10th ounce coins that were also stand alone products.

The problem isn't over now that Goldback has discontinued 100's either. The long-term impact of discontinuing the 100 is that now the Florida, Arizona, Oklahoma, and even the most recent Idaho sets will have to miss their capstone art. Possibly forever. Anyone caring to defend Goldbacks will have to forever explain that the 100 was a discontinued failed experiment and that their cost isn't a good reflection on the value proposition of Goldback as a whole. It's a small consolation that people that own the 100's at least have something that could end up being an incredible collectible in 5 years, especially if Goldback continues to take off. Not too different from $500 or $1,000 bills which also sell for a premium over regular dollars. That seems to be their fate. Hopefully Goldback learned their lesson in flying too close to the sun.

The 100 Goldback denomination was more than a mistake. They were a total disaster.
