I compared 11 student accommodation platforms so you don't have to (UK 2026)
Spent about 3 weeks last year jumping between tabs trying to find accommodation for my second year in Birmingham. Every platform looked the same on the surface so I made notes on each one. Sharing here because I couldn't find anything like this when I was searching.
Rated each one on: listing accuracy, whether it's free for students, how good the filters are, and international student friendliness.
The ones actually worth your time:
Casita — Free for students, listings are verified so what you see is what you get. Filters are decent — can search by budget, city, room type. Good if you're international and don't want to deal with dodgy Facebook groups. Downside: not every city has great coverage outside major unis.
Rightmove / Zoopla — Better for private house shares (HMO). Huge volume of listings but zero student-specific filters. You'll need to know what you're looking for already.
Unilodgers — Similar to Casita, PBSA focused. UI is fine. Felt slightly more sales-y when I was browsing.
SpareRoom — Best for finding housemates or joining an existing house. Not great for full property search.
Studentcom — Only lists their own properties so very limited but quality is consistent.
Accommodation for Students — Old school site, looks outdated but actually has decent HMO listings from smaller landlords.
Unite Students — University-affiliated feel, reliable, but pricier and limited locations.
iQ Student — Premium end, city centre focused. Good quality but budget students will struggle.
Student Roost — Similar to iQ, limited cities.
Hybr — Newer platform, growing fast, good for London. Limited elsewhere.
Facebook Groups — Technically free but genuinely a minefield. Seen too many horror stories. Use only as last resort and always verify before paying anything.
My honest take:
For PBSA — start with Casita or Unilodgers, cross-check on Studentcom.
For house shares — Rightmove + SpareRoom combo works best.
Don't rely on just one platform.
Which platform did you end up using and was it worth it? Genuinely curious if anyone had a different experience.
