One-month Kyushu and western Japan route with sightseeing trains

✈️ Itinerary

Thanks to u/wardXn for sharing a very detailed western Japan and Kyushu route. I cleaned it up into a day-by-day plan because the mix of Yamaguchi, Kyushu, sightseeing trains, onsen, volcanoes, odd museums and Setouchi detours is unusually useful for people planning beyond the standard loop.

Profile

This is a solo long-form trip from November 21 to December 23, focused on western Japan and Kyushu after a previous Tohoku adventure.

The traveler is mostly relying on public transport, but is open to driving if a place is exceptional and awkward without a car. Their priorities are nature, architecture, cultural sites, and random/esoteric things like sightseeing trains.

The first draft is intentionally packed. Commenters pushed back on the pace, but the author sees trains and onsen days as part of the downtime and expects to drop items on the fly if needed.

Questions

  • Is clockwise routing through Kyushu the best option, or would a counterclockwise or zig-zag route work better?
  • Should Takachiho be handled from Miyazaki, or grouped with Aso and Kurokawa from Kumamoto?
  • Where should the spare days go: Saga, deeper Kyushu nature, Yakushima, or buffers?
  • Are there late-November to late-December events in Kyushu worth building around?
  • What places are missing for nature, architecture, museums, odd sights or sightseeing trains?

Plan

Day 0 - Tokyo arrival or overnight train option

  • Arrive in Tokyo.
  • Either rest in Tokyo or take the Sunrise Izumo.
  • Alternative: fly to Hagi-Iwami Airport the next day.

Day 1 - Iwami and Tsuwano

  • Start in Shimane.
  • Visit Iwami and Tsuwano.

Day 2 - Hagi to Kokura

  • Explore Hagi Castle Town.
  • Take the Marumaru no Hanashi sightseeing train toward Kokura.

Day 3 - Mojiko and Shimonoseki

  • Base in Kokura.
  • Day trip to Mojiko and Shimonoseki.
  • Corrected by commenters: the crossing is via the Kanmon pedestrian tunnel, not a bridge walk.
  • Possible add-on: Kyushu Railway History Museum near Mojiko Station.

Day 4 - Kokura and Fukuoka

  • Morning in Kokura for TOTO Museum and the manga museum.
  • Afternoon/evening in Fukuoka for yatai, Canal City and central wandering.

Day 5 - Fukuoka and Dazaifu

  • Ohori Park and Fukuoka Art Museum.
  • Dazaifu Tenmangu and Kyushu National Museum.
  • Community note: Dazaifu is a separate town and can take most of a day, so this may need more breathing room.

Day 6 - Ureshino Onsen

  • Shift into Saga.
  • Use Ureshino Onsen as a slower onsen stop.

Day 7 - Sasebo and possibly Hirado

  • JMSDF Sasebo Museum Sail Tower.
  • Sasebo City Museum Shimanose Art Center.
  • Hirado is tempting but may be awkward by public transport.

Day 8 - Huis Ten Bosch to Nagasaki

  • Visit Huis Ten Bosch.
  • Take the Two Stars 4047 sightseeing train toward Nagasaki.

Days 9 to 10 - Nagasaki

  • Gunkanjima.
  • Glover Garden.
  • Chinatown and central Nagasaki.
  • Commenter suggestion: do not miss Mt. Inasa at night.
  • Alternative if Nagasaki feels too long: Unzen Onsen and Shimabara Peninsula for volcanic scenery.

Day 11 - Kumamoto

  • Suizenji Garden.
  • Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto.

Day 12 - Aso and Kurokawa

  • Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine.
  • Aso Shrine.
  • Mt. Aso.
  • Kurokawa Onsen.
  • Try the Aso Boy! sightseeing train if the timing works.

Day 13 - Kumamoto or Aso buffer

  • Keep as a float day for Kumamoto, Aso or Kurokawa.
  • Community note: Takachiho is much easier with a car, but from public transport Kumamoto may offer more tour options.

Days 14 to 15 - Kagoshima and Ibusuki

  • Sengan-en.
  • Reimeikan.
  • Nagashima Museum.
  • Ibusuki sand bath and southern Kagoshima.
  • Ibusuki no Tamatebako sightseeing train.
  • Commenter suggestion: consider Nishi-Oyama Station and Tamatebako Onsen for views.

Day 16 - Sakurajima

  • Cycle around Sakurajima.

Day 17 - Kirishima Onsen

  • Shift to Kirishima for an onsen-focused day.

Day 18 - Miyazaki coast

  • Sun Messe Nichinan.
  • Udo Shrine.
  • Aoshima Shrine.
  • Obi Castle Ruins.
  • Community note: this is already a full day. The Umisachi-Yamasachi joyful train may fit the route if schedules line up.

Day 19 - Takachiho or Miyazaki to Beppu

  • Takachiho Gorge if transport works.
  • 36+3 sightseeing train toward Beppu if schedules and budget make sense.
  • Community note: 36+3 is slow, expensive and runs only on certain weekdays, so it should be treated as an experience rather than efficient transport.

Days 20 to 21 - Beppu and maybe Yufuin

  • Beppu Jigoku.
  • Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center.
  • Oita art museums if time allows.
  • Yufuin is probably better as a relaxing overnight than a busy day trip.

Day 22 - Akiyoshido and Motonosumi Inari

  • Use a day tour to solve public transport issues.
  • Community note: half an hour at Motonosumi Inari sounds rushed, and Akiyoshido may also deserve more time.

Day 23 - Hiroshima

  • Mitaki Temple.
  • Return to Mt. Misen if desired.

Day 24 - Etajima or Shimanami Kaido cycling

  • Etajima cycling, or repeat part of the Shimanami Kaido.

Day 25 - Onomichi or Tomonoura

  • etSETOra sightseeing train to Onomichi.
  • Possible Tomonoura detour.
  • Community note: if changing trains at Fukuyama, the castle is right by the station.

Day 26 - Okayama buffer

  • Korakuen.
  • Possible half-day trip to Kojima.
  • This can be dropped to deepen Kyushu.

Day 27 - Kobe buffer

  • Chinatown.
  • Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial.
  • Kobe Tower and central Kobe.
  • Also droppable if Kyushu needs more time.

Days 28 to 31 - Free days and Osaka

  • One unallocated day.
  • Three days held for Osaka shopping, last-minute additions or recovery.
  • Community suggestions leaned toward spreading these free days across the trip instead of saving all the rest for the end.

Day 32 - Fly from KIX

  • Morning departure.

Community suggestions

Several commenters thought the plan was overpacked and suggested distributing the free days as rest days throughout the route. The counterpoint was that onsen stops and sightseeing trains can function as recovery time, but the practical advice still stands: protect slack before the trip starts feeling like transport homework.

Hagi came up as worth more time. One commenter stayed three nights there and called it a favorite, with Dondon Hijiwara suggested for dinner.

The route may not match the stated nature priority yet. Commenters suggested adding more Kyushu mountains and nature, especially Yakushima if the traveler can spare at least one night, though 3 to 4 days would make more sense. Yakushima without a car is possible, but it should not be treated as a tiny add-on.

For odd stops, Hita was suggested after Beppu for the Attack on Titan museums, Sapporo Beer Garden and a small whisky memorabilia museum/bar.

For routing, a car would make Aso, Kurokawa and Takachiho dramatically easier. Without one, tours and bus schedules will shape the trip more than the map does.
