Moving from cover to accompanying

Hello guys. I'm playing Piano Man by Billy Joel for our graduation ceremony, it's the first time I'm playing in a band. I mastered the cover these four days, but I know that's not the right thing to play as I'm accompanying and there'll be a singer and a guitarist. I still have a week. Would it be better to start a complete different arrangement from zero, or to improvise based on the cover. Thanks !
