Recently noticed a bit of water on the headliner, near the rear door, after car washes. Not a huge deal, because I planned to remove and replace the cloth in the future. Wanting to gut the interior and completely sound deaden it, with a slew of other upgrades coming up.

Obviously I needed a new seal, so I ordered one from Japan and waited for a month. Only $100 to do it that way. First thing I noticed was it took considerably more effort to close the door. That a good sign it’s doing a more effective job. No more leaks, but it was also noticeably quieter inside! I realized I’d been attributing a lot more wind noise to the roof rack, than it deserved. Still not what I’d wanted regarding air leaks, so I ordered new rubber for the large door openings. It was also noticeably better, but not as significant as the cargo door. Said screw it and ordered a set for the front doors. Just put those on yesterday and was surprised at how much of a difference they made. Not as much as the cargo door, but significant. The only ones I have not done yet, are the rear side doors (we calling them suicide doors?). Those are discontinued and kind of expensive for what you get. Probably will procure a set while I still can, through.

Point is: if you are tiring of a noisy interior, your seals may be worse than you think. Mine is kept primarily indoors, so I didn’t think anything of it, until my ears told me different. I’m glad I discovered it before going nuts with sound deadener. Would have been pretty bummed out do all of that, only to have it still noisy inside!

Kind of hopeful for a very quiet interior, now. It’s high on the list of things that I do not enjoy about the FJ. Fortunately, that list is pretty short and not nearly long enough to see replacing it. That said, if and when the time does ever come, its replacement will be bank vault silent.

Just replaced most of the door seals (significantly improved)
