Switching to student visa - anyone with knowledge?

Has anyone switched from an HPI visa to a student visa ? Did you do so while in the UK- or can you get a student visa while in your home country even while your HPI visa is still active ?

(I posted this earlier but it was removed by the mod because it referred to the HPI visa - seemed like a mistake given this is a page for the HPI visa…)
