Does this sound like genuine love?

Love & Dating

I grew up in an abusive home, so I never got a good idea of what love is. Everything with my parents was contingent on something, and the second I didn't meet their expectations I was met with insults, silent treatment, neglect, or threats.

I have tried to be conscience of this, because it terrifies me how common abuse victims become abusers, or unhealthy people. My last relationship is sadly over, and it hurts a lot, but I wanted to try and figure out for my own peace of mind: was it love or was it unhealthy?

It's really hard to describe my feelings, I did feel extremely strong attachment to my ex. I was deeply interested in all the happenings with his life and past, I loved doing activities together because every conversation felt comforting, I saw so much beauty in how he treated others and his strong skillset. It was easy to tell him all the things I admired in how he acted. There were times I felt frustrated with him, but I never felt I didn't love him, and was always interested in working through them. It was mostly our different communication styles, like I would get frustrated the times he'd go more than 3 days without texting. Maybe that's clingy but I just got worried not hearing from him.

My frustrations make me scared though, was it not real love? Did I only love him when he was my ideation of him? Should I have accepted he was more in need of space at times? But my counter argument is that I never faltered from wanting to be with him, and I was understanding it was more me communicating my needs and seeing if there was a middle ground.

Sorry for the long post, and this may be hard to answer without knowing me, but it's on my mind a lot. I hope I am able to have healthy romantic relationships in spite of my upbringing :(
