Has anyone dealt with driver license renewal after moving from STEM OPT to H-1B? I tried to renew it in the state of Nevada
My H-1B change of status started in October 2025. I’m still employed with the same company. I have my I-797A with I-94, but no H-1B visa stamp yet because I haven’t traveled. My STEM OPT EAD is still valid until June 19.
I went to DMV to renew my license before it expires. The clerk was very nice and called her supervisor multiple times, but she said the system showed “pending” and they were unable to verify my status. At one point, her system was only showing that they could renew it until June 19, which confused me because that is my STEM OPT EAD expiration date, not my H-1B end date.
She told me to come back after my STEM OPT EAD expires which was weird. I’m wondering if they may have entered or checked my old OPT/EAD information instead of my current H-1B I-797A/I-94.
Is this normal? Shouldn’t the I-797A + I-94 be enough to verify current H-1B status even without a visa stamp?
