X64SD → Mazzer Philos: Worth the Upgrade? [€1,000+]
Location: Austria
Preferred drink types: Espresso, milk-based espresso drinks, filter coffee, AeroPress, and cold brew.
Drink frequency: 2–6 drinks per day. I regularly switch between espresso and filter brew methods.
Space: No major countertop limitations.
Experience level: Experienced home barista. Current setup is a La Marzocco Micra paired with a Mahlkönig X64SD.
Manual or electric: Electric.
Candidates: Mazzer Philos vs keeping my Mahlkönig X64SD.
I’m considering upgrading from my X64SD to a Mazzer Philos and would appreciate some advice from people who have used both.
I generally like the X64SD, but there are a few things that bother me:
The motor has to be running while changing grind settings.
Burr access and cleaning take longer than I’d like.
The bellows/blow-out system only partially clears retention.
Since both grinders use 64 mm burrs, I’m wondering whether the Philos would actually be a meaningful upgrade or mostly a workflow improvement.
For those who have experience with both:
Is the cup quality noticeably better for espresso and filter?
Is switching between brew methods easier?
Is the workflow and build quality worth paying more than double the price?
Or should I simply keep the X64SD?
