How do I confront my mother about her weird hobby that’s slowly become an addiction?
Semi-recently my mother (60) got into a new hobby. I don’t even know if you can call listening to ai stories a hobby but anyway, she listens to this mafia wattpad slop on YouTube which I have a hunch is ai generated, or at the very least ai assisted. The voices are ai and the images used during the video look like they could be ai generated too.
It’s your average wattpad slop: mafia boss falls in love with petit girl and some drama happens. My mother listens to this shit no matter what. Living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom. Even when she’s asleep. I’ve come home from college before and it’s still playing and draining battery while she’s knocked out.
She blasts it at full volume most of the time. I can hear it through my bedroom walls, and even now writing this I’ve put headphones on to drown out the noise upstairs. I’ve asked her to turn it down before and she’s agreed, but I can always still faintly hear it because it’s driving me insane. She even listens to it while also watching tv.
These videos don’t seem to be explicit. There was one time where I was trying to get YouTube up for my nephew and she was blasting it on the couch, and I immediately confronted her when I heard some shit about a girl being touched. She panicked and turned it off after some fumbling with her phone. On that note, she is completely tech illiterate. She can barely take a picture let alone work YouTube, so my theory is that one of her work friends got her into it. I’m pissed off because it’s obviously not good for her to constantly need those fuckass stories to function.
She doesn’t have any other hobbies. She used to draw but she doesn’t do much at home aside from chores and sleeping. I’ve been thinking about maybe trying to get her into actual productive hobbies like journaling or collecting stuff, but she’s like a brick wall.
I’ve come here to ask for advice on how I get her to stop listening to this brain rotting drivel because it’s turned into an addiction and it’s just insanely aggravating hearing it through the walls. How do I explain to her what ai even is? She doesn’t seem to know that ai generated content exists. How do I tell her she needs to at least cut down on it? I’m always so close to snapping and turning her phone off myself, but obviously I don’t want to cause any issue.
Anything helps.
