Friends after marriage
Is it possible to stay friends? Recently separated and going to be starting the processes of ending a 15 year marriage (married 13 together 15!. To summarize as short as possible, we still love each other, enjoy each other’s company but there is no intimacy emotionally or physically. We didn’t nurture our romantic relationship and the friendship we have has out grown our romantic connection. I am gutted by leaving, but I know it’s the right decision for me. I’ve been doing alot of work on myself in therapy and he is incredibly avoidant. We all know the story, I tried for years to advocate for change and connection and he couldn’t meet me. Now he says he’ll goto therapy but only after I had to leave and only if we stay together-signaling to me he isn’t ready to work on himself and I feel we wouldn’t just end up here again in a few months.
I know things will take time, I am not ignorant to that. But is maintaining a friendship possible? We don’t have a messy divorce, no house no kids no assets, just emotional healing. We’re trying for conscious uncoupling. But is it possible? I don’t see much representation of that unless there’s kids to keep you together. I feel secure in our decision but currently getting hit with a grieve wave of realizing that we could ultimately become strangers which breaks my heart in words I cannot express.
