I'm thinking about buying a used bike, would you guys recommend that?

I'm in Egypt and prices here are just insane so i'm thinking about buying used but scared because i don't understand much stuff in bikes. I want to buy those bikes with gears that switch according to what speed you want.

What should i look for if i'm going to take this step soon?
