I (23F) was in what I genuinely thought was the healthiest relationship I'd ever had. We dated for a few months, and everything felt easy. We communicated well, rarely fought, and I felt loved and valued.

During our relationship, his mom became seriously ill and was hospitalized. I stayed by his side through that period as much as I could. It was an incredibly stressful and emotional time for him, and I tried my best to support him.

Eventually, his mom passed away.

After that, something changed. He became distant, emotionally unavailable, and seemed like a completely different person. I understood that grief affects everyone differently, so I gave him space and tried not to pressure him.

A while later, he told me he couldn't continue the relationship and broke up with me.

What makes this so difficult is that there wasn't any cheating, toxicity, or major conflict between us. The relationship itself wasn't the problem. It feels like I lost both my boyfriend and the future I imagined with him because of circumstances neither of us could control.

Part of me understands that he was drowning in grief and probably didn't have the emotional capacity for a relationship. Another part of me wonders whether he truly stopped loving me or whether he just needed to push everyone away while dealing with such a huge loss.

It's been hard to move on because there was never a clear reason beyond the tragedy that happened in his life.

Has anyone else experienced a breakup that happened because of grief rather than relationship problems? Did your ex ever come back once they had time to heal, or was the breakup permanent?
