AI referrers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) outsent Google organic for the first time last month

Been watching analytics on a small content site I run for my SaaS, and something flipped last month I didn't expect.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude combined sent me more visitors than Google organic did. First time that's happened.

And it wasn't AI traffic exploding. Google organic fell off a cliff at the same time, roughly cut in half month over month.

I'd spent most of my effort writing for Google. Benchmark pages, long-tail stuff.

Turns out the pages getting pulled into AI answers are the ones with clean, citable data near the top (a specific number, a table), not the keyword-padded ones. The engines want a quotable fact, not a 2,000-word post that buries it.

Two things I'm changing:

1. Writing for the citation, not the ranking. One clear sourced stat up top so an LLM can lift it cleanly.

2. Actually capturing the AI traffic where it lands. Those readers come for one number and bounce. They never scroll to the bottom where the old CTA sat.

My numbers are small and early so I'm not calling this a law. But the trend was steep enough that I stopped treating Google as the only game.

Anyone else watching AI referrers climb? Curious whether Google's down for you too or if it's just my niche.
