Scaddabush in Toronto
Took my husband to Scaddabush for lunch yesterday. Upon entry, the music was blaring me, which bothers me no end but that's not the story. I told the hostess I was waiting for my husband, who was parking the car. They seated me away from the noise, and set the table with two place settings and menus. After a few minutes, the waitress came and asked if I was ready to order. I pointedly looked at the menu and said "No, I'm waiting for my party." My husband came, we ordered, and the server did not come once to refill our empty water carafe.
Then the bill came. Default tip started at 18%. I didn't want to leave ANY tip, but I'm American, where servers dont earn a livable wage, ($7.25/hr) and the impetus to tip is strong, so I ended up leaving 15%. Deeply regret it. I feel like tipping for good service but this wasn't it. I think that going forward, tip will be zero if tipping default starts at 18% or more. Minimum wade in Ontario is $17.60/ hour, going up to $17.95 in October.
