Muslims and the Mental Health Field
Salaam,
I’m curious about how many individuals in the Muslim community go into the mental health field. It may just be the area I live in (United States), but there are very few Muslim mental health counselors/therapists. I’m currently a student therapist and I’ve seen a handful of Muslim women counselors, in various practices, but it’s not many. And I don’t think I’ve seen any Muslim male therapists. It makes me wonder about the lack cultural competence in the mental health field regarding Muslim ideologies, and how the Muslim identity might look different for men vs women. Do you think things will change and we will integrate more into the mental health field with time or do you think it’ll generally remain a less pursued career path within the Muslim Community?
