Can any demo main give me some tips?

I started playing him today because he's kinda cute lowkey, but it's way more challenging than I thought it would be. The shred is fine to handle I guess, just takes a LITTLE bit of getting used to, but I really struggle with the portals. When and where should I place them, and when should I actually use them? I know that you'd probably need aura perks to know where survivors are to traverse over to them using the portals, but where do I actually place them? Also what are some good perk builds you use and what are the best add-ons? I really want to get better with him
