How do I deal with a smart rat?

Hey y'all, I've never really dealt with a rat before, and I just spotted one today in my house, and it's pretty smart. I have dogs, so I need to be extra cautious about this situation. Can anyone give me tips that are not too hard or require ordering complex traps? And maybe any permanent solution to not have rats ever again? I was thinking of trapping it and releasing it somewhere far, some people suggested rat poison, but it seems cruel, though this rat could also risk the lives of my dogs, putting out poison could also possibly do the same, I don't want it to reach the dogs. So, my safest bet is traps, they won't k¡ll the rat, but they might help me get rid of it. Any sort of tips are greatly appreciated!
