Didn’t set myself up for success during college, how do I get back on track?
Hi! I’m a recent graduate, majored in sociology and political science with a minor in labor studies. I struggled with a lot of mental health issues during college as well as a lack of direction. I started off college with one career plan, but realized that I don’t love lab work or chemistry as much as I needed to two years in. I pivoted and really enjoyed taking classes in sociology and political science and was really engaged in student activism at my university, which unfortunately led me to focus more on that than getting useful work experience. I interned with a labor union my last year of college but the internship wasn’t well run, and it also made me not really want to work in a union in that sort of capacity.
My main struggle throughout college was severe anxiety, so I had a hard time networking with professors and feel genuine fear when I think about reaching out for references, although I did have one professor offer without me asking my junior year. Not sure if the offer still stands.
My GPA was not great, below 3.0 but above 2.5.
Now I’m just worked at a cafe and feeling extremely lost. I’m interested in going to graduate school to get a Masters in Library Information Sciences, or potentially law school or social work, (have been working on my mental health and think that I can get myself into a place where I can handle it a LOT better— I was a good student with a high GPA in high school but just really struggled during undergrad.)
But I feel like I don’t have anything to show for my college career and there’s no reason for anywhere to accept me. I lack any great recommendations, and my one real strength is writing— I know that I could write compelling essays explaining my lapses in academic success and my plans for how I would make use of any of these graduate degrees.
Has anyone experienced this? I feel like I wasted four years of my life (career wise) and failed over and over again, even with so many opportunities on my campus. Also apologies if this isn’t the right sub for this type of question, maybe I should be on a more specific page, I don’t know.
How do I put myself back on track and build a career after this? I’m feeling kind of hopeless right now.
