My teen is going to be so sad
And there’s nothing I can do to make it better.
My 14 year old is 6’2, 230 lbs, size 15 feet. Overall a big guy. I do realize he’s also extremely overweight. Because of his overall size he doesn’t look that big, but he is big. I’ve done so much research on diets and exercise my entire life (growing up I was never fat, but was extremely restricted to foods and weekly weigh-ins bc my dad didn’t want me to get fat) I could probably be a registered dietician at this point with everything I’ve taught myself.
However, because of the way I was restricted I ended up a fat adult bc I started eating foods I was never allowed. I am now at a healthy weight, but it took a lot to get here. I promised myself when I had kids I just wanted them to be healthy, I wouldn’t focus on their weight and we’d eat in moderation with no foods being “bad” foods.
My teen eats pretty healthy foods (I don’t keep a lot of junk in the house), but his issue is portions. He’ll literally serve himself 3 plates of food (rice and beans for example). He can eat 4 avocados in a sitting. A pound of strawberries. His appetite is insatiable. His doctor at this point isn’t concerned bc he says it’s probably genetics (his dad was also a chubby kid/adult, now healthy size).
Anyhow, we go to this local water park every year. My youngest had been begging to go again and as a year end trip we’re going tomorrow. I just realized the weight limit on the slides is 225. He won’t be able to go on anything. They weigh you on each slide in front of everyone before you get on (which is horrible if you ask me, but I digress). He’s going to be so heartbroken that he won’t be able to go on anything. I’m afraid he’ll also sour the mood for my youngest bc he’ll be pouting.
But I can’t fix this. We do exercise together, I do talk about calories and nutrition, but it seems he doesn’t get the concept of too many calories without enough movement will make you gain weight.
I’m just so sad bc this is something I can’t make better. I’m sad he’s dealing with weight issues as a teen and it’s likely genetics. I’m just sad he won’t be able to do any slides bc of his weight. I’m mad that I feel like this is my fault bc I should’ve done something different to not make him this way.
I’m open to kind words and even advice as to how to help him with his weight.
