Moving with elementary school and Jr High kids

I was looking at potentially moving to the SLO area and wanted to know if there are recommendations on neighborhoods that have schools that parents and kids enjoy. At times schools can have high ratings on sites but in reality people prefer a different school in another area. I appreciate any thoughts.
