Bought a car secondhand, What do i do now?

im buying a car from a family friend and i was wondering what steps i take after taking it to the shop? i know that i need to get it registered and licensed, but im not sure if the person I'm getting it from has papers or anything. i know that it is a prior salvage, so i don't know if that changes anything. i have never bought/owned a car and everyone i know with one bought it from a dealership. any advice would be excellent and i can answer any questions as well.
