Possible Movement After Intent to File Writ of Mandamus – My Timeline
I wanted to share my experience in case it helps others with long-pending I-485 cases.
I completed my interview in December 2025. After the interview, the case remained pending for approximately 6 months with no final decision.
Because of the prolonged delay, I sent an Intent to File Writ of Mandamus letter to both USCIS and the U.S. Attorney General on June 5, 2026.
According to USPS certified mail tracking, both agencies received the letter on June 8, 2026.
What happened next was interesting:
June 10: No visible activity in the USCIS API.
June 11: Three separate backend updates appeared in the API on the same day.
June 11: The case changed from actionRequired: true to actionRequired: false.
June 12: A PDF document appeared in my USCIS online account.
June 12: A new backend event code (H008) appeared in the USCIS API.
Before this, the case had been largely stagnant for months after the interview.
I cannot prove that the Intent to File Writ of Mandamus caused the movement, and every case is different. Correlation does not necessarily mean causation. However, the timing was notable because the case showed significant activity almost immediately after the certified letters were received.
I’m sharing this timeline for informational purposes only. A mandamus letter does not guarantee approval, but in my situation it was followed by the first meaningful movement on the case in months.
I will continue to update this post as additional developments occur.
