As SpaceX shares surged from $135 to nearly $168 in their first day of trading, crowning Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire, the richest man in history was not quietly contemplating rockets or Mars colonies. He was spending his moment of triumph on X (formerly Twitter) amplifying voices that openly cheered violence against immigrants, endorsed “reconquista,” and framed Africans and other non-white migrants as a “cancer” that Western nations must expel.

This juxtaposition is jarring not because wealth and ugly opinions have never coexisted, but because of the scale and insulation now at play. Musk’s fortune, ballooned by a stock that trades at an eye-watering multiple of revenue for a still-unprofitable company, rests on financial engineering, index-fund capture, retail hype, and substantial government contracts. Yet the man at the center of this empire used his amplified platform to signal solidarity with far-right narratives of white victimhood and ethnic removal.

In the days surrounding the IPO, Musk engaged with content depicting African immigrants as inherent threats, retweeted approvingly sentiments that violence has its place in history when dealing with “invaders,” and echoed claims of systematic discrimination against white people. One exchange involved explicit calls for a “reconquista” in response to riots targeting immigrant communities. These are not abstract culture-war provocations. In context, they read as incitement toward ethnic cleansing, the forcible removal or worse of people based on origin and race.

A defense that Musk is merely “trolling” or “highlighting uncomfortable truths”, collapses under scrutiny. The world’s most powerful individual does not accidentally platform eliminationist rhetoric while his companies depend on global talent, international markets, and government relationships. Nor does it square with the reality that his own businesses have long benefited from the very openness and immigration he now seems eager to torch.

What makes this moment especially troubling is the insulation wealth provides. Musk’s net worth, propped up by index funds that must buy the stock regardless of valuation, related-party deals shifting money among his companies, and a governance structure that leaves him firmly in control, shields him from consequences that would end most careers. Advertisers fled X after previous controversies but have reasons to return under the current political climate. Financial counterparties cannot easily walk away from a trillion-dollar figure. The result is a man who can flirt with white nationalist-adjacent themes while the machinery of modern finance and government quietly accommodates him.

This is not sustainable. A society that allows its most visible success story to mainstream eliminationist ideas risks normalizing them. When the figure atop the leaderboard for human wealth treats pogrom-adjacent unrest as a positive model, it signals to millions that such thinking is not fringe but elite-endorsed. The economic fundamentals of SpaceX — heavy reliance on hype, low float, and forced institutional buying — already invite skepticism about the durability of the valuation. Layer on moral and social risk of this magnitude, and the downside becomes existential.

America has long tolerated eccentric billionaires. What feels new is the combination of unprecedented concentration of wealth, control over critical infrastructure and discourse, and an apparent eagerness to stoke the very divisions that undermine the stable, high-trust environment successful innovation requires. Musk’s trillionaire coronation should have been a moment to reflect on technological ambition. Instead, it coincided with a darker broadcast: even at the summit of worldly success, some cannot resist the pull of grievance and expulsion.

The markets may cheer the pop in SpaceX shares. History, however, will judge what the man at the center chose to amplify as he reached the pinnacle. So far, the record is not flattering.
