Am I overreacting for wanting clarity before meeting with a friend who suddenly stopped talking to me?
I (25F) had a very close friend (25F “Becky” for privacy) who I considered one of my best friends. As far as I knew, she considered me one of her closest friends too.
At the end of April, our communication suddenly stopped. There was no argument, no conflict that I was aware of and no indication that anything was wrong. I texted and called a few times over the course of a couple days just checking on her because I was concerned. My messages were things like “everything okay?” and “I’m here if you need anything.”
For a good two weeks or so she was posting on her socials but ignoring my messages and calls, I took that as a sign she needed space then she deleted all her socials and deactivated everything.
I didn’t hear back for almost a month.
At the end of May, Becky finally reached out and asked if we could meet in person. She said it had been on her heart to be honest with me about what happened, gain mutual understanding and hopefully make amends. That message confused me because I genuinely didn’t know there was even an issue between us. From my perspective, communication had just suddenly stopped on her end.
I responded by saying that before meeting up, I’d like some clarity about what happened because I was confused and didn’t know why we had stopped talking.
She replied that the conversation would be about issues regarding herself not directly toward me and said she understood. She then told me that instead of meeting right away, she would take time to write everything out and send it to me at “some point”.
I said okay and waited.
Weeks went by and no explanation ever came.
Yesterday I reacted to her message with a question mark because I was confused about what happened to the explanation she said she would send.
Her response shocked me. She told me she was bothered by the fact that I didn’t want to meet up and said it was “sus” for someone who says they’ve done nothing wrong. She said she was going to take my hesitation as her answer. She also said, “trust and know that I have never stabbed anyone in the back” and thanked me for being there when she had no one.
The thing is, I never accused her of stabbing me in the back, betraying me, gossiping about me, or doing anything malicious. I never even said she had done something wrong. I only asked for clarity because she disappeared for a month, told me she would send an explanation and then never sent it.
I responded by explaining that my hesitation wasn’t because I thought she was a bad person. It was because I was hurt and confused by the distance and was still waiting for the explanation she had promised. I told her it felt like we were having two completely different conversations. And I suggested a phone call if she’s open to it to get a better understanding of what’s going on and the misunderstanding on both ends. I essentially compromised my boundary, clarity first, to make her feel comfortable.
At this point I’m wondering if I’m missing something. Was it unreasonable for me to want some context before meeting in person? Am I overreacting by feeling blindsided that my request for clarity was interpreted as suspicion or an accusation and then an attack on my character out of nowhere when I genuinely thought I was asking a pretty reasonable question? This whole situation is so odd to me I feel a little crazy…
