another silence begins
I was dumped 10 days ago by my girlfriend of nearly 3 years. I was stunned and angry at this betrayal and not much of value was said. I mean we were supposed to watch a movie, damn it. Then 5 days later we had a tearful "closure" talk while I was saying goodbye to her dog, a little mercurial bundle of joy who I love dearly and always will. During this farewell summit I expressed my devastation, my confusion, and acknowledged the sins and flaws on both sides (mostly my side since I still held out hope for reconciliation) but I never begged. I never asked for a second chance and I committed to going radio silent in order to commence the healing process. After all, I had done it once before and it landed me in a decent spot to seek out the next potential shattering heartbreak. Why not try it again from the outset this time?
However, I got home from work today, opened my mailbox for the first time in a couple weeks, sifted through some junk mail and a couple wedding invitations where I would undoubtedly be flying solo, and there I found a postcard she had sent back to me while on a recent trip with her best friend. The tone between then and now (a month at most) was night and day. Just around the previous bend was someone who loved me and who stated it plainly, in ink, and in the language I speak: The King's English! This was a jolt to my deadened state - here was the ammunition I needed. These words were penned just a few weeks back, right? The person that wrote that still must be there, perhaps in hiding somewhere? A brief euphoria surged through me again for the first time since the breakup and in what can only be described as an act of supreme hubris, I mustered up the courage for one last charge unto the breach, unsheathing my trusty smartphone...
As a self-proclaimed master of textcraft, I carefully concocted the perfect foreword to explain the coincidence of the postcard and to quell any suspicion that I had been sleeplessly dwelling on the very question I was destined to ask. Hitting send, at once I broke my silence and surrendered my dignity: "Can we just have a discussion about working this out?"
The answer was a firm no and another silence begins.
