Does Michael Giacchino's Catwoman theme in The Batman plagiarize John Barry's score from The Specialist?

Discussion

TLDR: Does Michael Giacchino's Catwoman theme in The Batman plagiarize John Barry's score from The Specialist? I hear strong similarities—want r/movies opinions after comparing these tracks. Also curious about rights since both are Warner Bros. films.

Hey r/movies, I've been listening to the scores for The Batman (2022) and The Specialist (1994) and can't unhear the vibe in the Catwoman theme. It feels very sultry, jazzy, and femme-fatale like John Barry's work, especially stuff from The Specialist. A few reviews even point out the echoes. I'm not a music expert, so I wanted to ask if people think this crosses into straight-up plagiarism or if it's just a stylistic homage/influence, which is pretty common in film scoring.

The Batman Catwoman theme

The Specialist relevant cue, e.g. Mae's theme or similar

Both movies were ultimately under the Warner Bros. umbrella (The Specialist distributed by Warner Bros., The Batman produced/released by Warner Bros. Pictures), but they're from totally different productions decades apart. From what I can tell, there's no direct sampling or cue reuse—just Giacchino channeling that Barry sound. Temp tracks often use existing scores as reference, but actual plagiarism would need clearance or licensing. Anyone know more about how score rights work across studio projects like this? Do you hear the similarity, or am I reaching? Would love to hear thoughts!
