CPD says they can't call hospitals to look for my missing brother. Advice?
Hi all, I really love this community and am hoping for some advice from someone who's been in a similar situation.
My brother hasn't been seen or heard of since this Monday evening. His coworkers and I filed a police report, but the officer said he can't call around at hospitals because "HIPAA is weird". He said they'd need a warrant to get that kind of info, and they'd only get a warrant for a high-risk missing person. He was not deemed high risk, despite this being extremely atypical behavior for him and the fact he has type 1 diabetes that can leave him comatose.
I'm genuinely asking - isn't that why we're supposed to file missing persons reports? So the police, who have provable identities, can gather information that I don't have access to? Maybe they're understaffed, and I know there are many people in need all over the city, but I'm genuinely confused as to why all they can apparently do is put him in a database and wait for information to turn up.
If anyone else has been in my shoes and has suggestions, or a script I can use to call the precinct, I'd appreciate it. I still plan to call his local hospitals.
