How bad is faking a college degree?

I’m 25, kind of insecure about never going to college, I feel like I would need one to live on my own and get away from my abusive family. They are gen x’ers who still think the economy is like the 1970s or something

Could I get in any legal trouble for trying to lie about a degree to obtain high paying employment?
