Ability Rework Series: Download
Hi y'all. I've recently been interested in designing Pokemon ROMHacks, and I was planning to redesign some abilities. This will be a multi-part series, and I'm tryna give some life to some OG classics and some left aside new abilities. The first is Download, and I have some really interesting ideas with it, and I hope you like it!
Download (Reworked)---Introduction
Currently, Download is an unusual ability in Pokemon, giving a + 1 in offensive stats depending on its opponents defensive state. This ability is interesting, but has so much more potential, making the Porygons far more potent offensively and more bulky defensively. This rebuilt logic system aims to rework Download to adapt to the enemy Pokemon’s entire stat spread, giving it more versatility.
Now, this logic system may make some Pokemon broken, but most Pokemon, by distribution, are suited to utilize this ability to be BALANCED, whether by movepools, typing, or stat spreads. A Pokemon running download would ideally be a mixed attacker, to further boost the adaptability of the mon. This wouldn’t be a stark change, seeing as most Pokemon that have this ability already have a fairly deep movepool with a relatively balanced stat spread.
Download (Reworked)---Adaptation Table
Download identifies the two highest stats on the opposing Pokémon.
- The highest stat grants +1 to a corresponding stat and -1 to a corresponding stat.
- The second-highest stat grants +1 to a corresponding stat.
- If multiple stats are tied, offensive adaptations are prioritized.
| Opponent's Highest Stat | Effect (+1 / -1) |
|---|---|
| HP | +Atk, -Def |
| Atk | +Def, -Sp.Def |
| Def | +Atk, -Sp.Atk |
| Sp. Atk | +Sp.Def, -Atk |
| Sp. Def | +Sp.Atk, -Atk |
| Spe | +Spe, -Atk or -Sp.Atk (whichever offensive stat is lower) |
| Opponent's Second-Highest Stat | Additional Effect (+1) |
|---|---|
| HP | +Atk |
| Atk | +Def |
| Def | +Atk |
| Sp. Atk | +Sp.Def |
| Sp. Def | +Sp.Atk |
| Spe | +Spe |
Stress Test 1: Regieleki
Typical Timid Specs/Scarf set.
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP | 156 |
| Atk | 120 |
| Def | 70 |
| SpA | 152 |
| SpD | 70 |
| Spe | 200 |
Highest stats:
- Speed (200)
- Special Attack (152)
Download:
- Speed → +1 Speed, -1 Attack
- Sp.Atk → +1 Special Defense
Result:
- +1 Speed
- +1 Special Defense
- -1 Attack
This is exactly what you'd want against a special speedster, giving you survivability against Thunderbolts, while also allowing you to outspeed potential resists that switch in. It also allows for setup to be more effective, as you no longer need to set up multiple agilities to outspeed a speedster like Regieleki. Admittedly, the increase in the Speed state COULD be redundant, but the increased survivability baits comparatively slower resists to swap in, which gives the mon an edge.
Stress Test 2: Blissey
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP | 714 |
| Atk | 56 |
| Def | 130 |
| SpA | 186 |
| SpD | 306 |
| Spe | 136 |
Highest stats:
- HP (714)
- Special Defense (306)
Download:
- HP → +1 Attack, -1 Defense
- Sp.Def → +1 Special Attack
Result:
- +1 Attack
- +1 Special Attack
- -1 Defense
Download aggressively reallocates resources toward wallbreaking. This outcome is surprisingly ideal, giving the mon good wallbreaking potential, and hedging against future setup by giving it +1 in both offensive stats, making it far more pressuring. The decrease in defense is negligible, since Blissey rarely plays an offensive role.
Stress Test 3: Shuckle
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP | 244 |
| Atk | 56 |
| Def | 614 |
| SpA | 56 |
| SpD | 614 |
| Spe | 96 |
Highest stats:
- Defense (614)
- Special Defense (614)
Tie resolved offensively. Flips a coin.
Download:
- Defense → +1 Attack, -1 Special Attack
- Sp.Def → +1 Special Attack
OR
- Sp. Def -> +1 Special Attack, - 1 Attack
- Def -> +1 Attack.
Result:
- +1 Attack
- -1 Special Attack
- +1 Special Attack
Net:
- +1 Attack OR +1 Sp. Atk
The AI chooses a physical breaking approach, similar to Blissey. The logic also prevents an offensive stat drop, which maintains damage potential by allowing the mon to use super effective moves of the non-boosted stat.
Stress Test 4: Flutter Mane
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP | 281 |
| Atk | 135 |
| Def | 146 |
| SpA | 405 |
| SpD | 369 |
| Spe | 405 |
Highest stats:
- Speed (405)
- Special Attack (405)
Tie broken toward offense.
Download:
- Speed → +1 Speed, -1 Attack
- Sp.Atk → +1 Special Defense
Result:
- +1 Speed
- +1 Special Defense
- -1 Attack
An ideal anti-Flutter adaptation, attempting to outspeed and survive to pick up a 2HKO.
Stress Test 5: Calyrex-Shadow
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP | 341 |
| Atk | 206 |
| Def | 196 |
| SpA | 471 |
| SpD | 236 |
| Spe | 438 |
Highest stats:
- Speed
- Special Attack
Download:
- Speed → +1 Speed, -1 Attack
- Sp.Atk → +1 Special Defense
Result:
- +1 Speed
- +1 Special Defense
- -1 Attack
Again, highly intuitive, attempting to outspeed and survive special attacks.
Stress Test 6: Zacian-Crowned
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP | 341 |
| Atk | 438 |
| Def | 361 |
| SpA | 196 |
| SpD | 361 |
| Spe | 418 |
Highest stats:
- Attack
- Speed
Download:
- Attack → +1 Defense, -1 Special Defense
- Speed → +1 Speed
Result:
- +1 Defense
- +1 Speed
- -1 Special Defense
Download correctly recognizes a physical offensive threat, letting it tank Behemoth Blades, and outspeed in return.
Stress Test 7: Deoxys-Attack
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP | 241 |
| Atk | 504 |
| Def | 46 |
| SpA | 504 |
| SpD | 46 |
| Spe | 306 |
Highest stats:
- Attack
- Special Attack
Download:
- Attack → +1 Defense, -1 Special Defense
- Sp.Atk → +1 Special Defense
Result:
- +1 Defense
- +1 Special Defense
- -1 Special Defense
Net:
- +1 Defense
This demonstrates a weakness in the logic. Against one of the strongest mixed attackers in the game, Download only gains Defense. This weakness however, is good for balancing and lore reasons. Good mixed attackers are supposed to be hard to defensively adapt to, giving them far more viability against this buffed ability while also giving effective counterplay against meta threats that may use this ability.
Stress Test 8: Arceus
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP | 444 |
| Atk | 372 |
| Def | 372 |
| SpA | 372 |
| SpD | 372 |
| Spe | 372 |
All non-HP stats tied.
Using the offensive tie-break:
Download:
- Defense → +1 Attack, -1 Special Attack
- Special Defense → +1 Special Attack
Result:
- +1 Attack
- -1 Special Attack
- +1 Special Attack
Net:
- +1 Attack
Arceus effectively causes Download to choose an offensive posture.
Stress Test 9: Eternatus
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| HP | 454 |
| Atk | 206 |
| Def | 226 |
| SpA | 427 |
| SpD | 226 |
| Spe | 394 |
Highest stats:
- HP
- Special Attack
Download:
- HP → +1 Attack, -1 Defense
- Sp.Atk → +1 Special Defense
Result:
- +1 Attack
- +1 Special Defense
- -1 Defense
A somewhat unusual adaptation that mixes wallbreaking and survivability.
Observations
The system naturally produces three broad archetypes:
| Opponent Type | Typical Download Outcome |
|---|---|
| Fast Special Sweeper | +Speed, +Sp.Def |
| Fast Physical Sweeper | +Speed, +Defense |
| Defensive Wall | +Attack, +Sp.Atk |
| Balanced Pokémon | Mild offensive boost |
| Mixed Attacker | Can produce awkward results |
The biggest stress point is Pokémon whose top two stats are Attack + Special Attack or Defense + Special Defense, where the adaptation can partially cancel itself. Those edge cases give life to mixed attackers, which have otherwise been largely left to the sidelines in VGC competitive play. This ability is already cracked, giving a free +2 stats at best, and +1 at worst, which means it is a strict upgrade over the former ability, especially when the Porygons may not be particularly as effective as attackers in a situation where the opponent is threatening a K.O, and instead allows for more survivability and adaptability.
