What’s the longest physical refusal duration data point you’ve put in?
New RBT here. Im feeling a little worn down after my session today. I’m with a client who I was told tends to push boundaries when he starts with a new RBT, so I knew that independent sessions would be a little different than the sessions with a trainer.
All that to say, we went to run a program w a 30 second target. He did not engage and attempted to elope. I blocked the door way (to avoid reinforcing escape maintained behavior) and told him we only had to do try for 5 seconds and he could tell me all done. Then comes physical refusal. I’d seen a few of his physical refusals in training so I knew what they looked like, but they lasted 2-3 minutes tops. This one? 11 minutes and 29 seconds. I did not talk, I did not engage, I presented the SD once at the beginning and then waited him out. I know that doesn’t feel like a long time, but when you’re standing there with a child pushing the weight of his entire body into you for 11 minutes and 29 seconds straight, grabbing your clothes and your face and your neck (had to do a grab release on my cheek, which I didn’t even know was possible)… it feels like an eternity.
Anyone else have experience with this? I have a great PM who sat down and talked with me about this client so I feel supported and have a plan for next time. I’m mostly just wondering how this experience compares to other people’s experiences. I’ve only been working there for two months now, and the first month or so was getting certified and training, so I don’t have much context for the bigger picture.
