Tyler is team captain for our 24 Hour of Lemons EV endurance racing team and he hauled our race car (an electric converted Datsun, long story) from Colorado to Thunderhill Raceway in California on an open trailer behind his R1T. Roughly 1,500 miles over the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada, truck loaded with about 600 lbs of gear on top of the trailer weight. I sat him down after the trip and picked his brain, and figured this sub would appreciate the real numbers since towing range is the eternal debate for EVs.

The quick stats:

Trailer plus car was about 4,500 lbs, plus a full bed, frunk, and gear tunnel. The truck auto-sensed the trailer weight which is so cool.

Range hit was about 40 percent at highway speed. Call it 160 to 170 miles of real range between stops instead of the rated 300ish.

14 charging stops Denver to Sacramento, which is the leg we filmed. The full route plan including the San Francisco detour and the final leg up to Thunderhill came to 20 stops and about 1,213 kWh, that's the route screenshot in the photos.

Total energy cost came out to about a third of what fuel would have run in his old F-250. He does this trip twice a year, so that adds up, especially these days.

The sketchy part was Salt Lake City to Wendover when there's basically nothing between them except a Level 1 at a rest stop, and he picked up a 20 to 25 mph headwind right out of SLC. Had to drop to 55 and rolled into Wendover with 5 percent. Made it, but yikes.

He's towed with an F-250, a Sierra, and a Tacoma over the years, and he said I-70 through the Rockies went from white knuckle brake management to a non-event because of regen.

He found that towing at 60 instead of 80 through can actually save time overall because the efficiency gain means fewer and shorter charge stops.

Not all smooth sailing, the charger sites that fit a truck plus open trailer without unhitching are hit or miss, so he's gotten very good at reversing out of tight lots.

Photos from the trip in the post, and the video I mentioned [is here if you're into that sort of thing.](https://youtu.be/Eq4p6aZTD9o)

My race teammate towed from Denver to California with his R1T. 20 charge stops, 1.2 MWh of energy, and about a third the cost of gas.
