I look upon my window from the stillness of my bed. The sky is weeping as though it knows what I am about to do.

I remember my eyes, the way they used to follow you, when you would laugh among the others and never once return my gaze. And when you looked at me, you looked at me as though I were a dead weight you had long since grown tired of dragging behind you.

Perhaps I was.

My heart still pleads for the smallest taste of your adoration, but my brain has already learned the shape of a blade against my wrist. It takes every shred of strength I have left not to beg you for a reason, because love, my dear, is never something you ask for. Love is poured over you like the rain pours from the sky onto the land, and the land drinks it until it drowns.

The land is fortunate. I think I shall become the land.

I let my brain win. I tear the layers of my own flesh apart to find the thing I lack, the reason I do not deserve the warmth of your fingers when you finally reach for someone else.

The blood drips down upon the mosaic of my dreams. It smears across the floor like a prayer that was never answered.

I leap from the ledge. The water rushes into my lungs, replacing every breath I ever took with the cold silence of forgetting. It is freezing. But I have been freezing for so long now.

For the last time, I scream your name into the depths. The water swallows it whole, and you will never hear it.

I watch my own hand reach for you, for anyone, for anything, but there is nothing left to hold. The water takes me down. I do not rise. I do not float. I do not break the surface. I settle at the bottom, where the light cannot find me.

My body is now a vessel filled with the blood of wanting you. Love can be ugly. Love can be beautiful. But love has always been the thing that kills me slowly.

I burn and turn to ash, scattered across the water's face. And now, at last, I feel the rain upon me without asking anything of it. I am no longer a living thing. I am the land.
