Is it possible (or I guess plausible) that the same groundhog keeps coming back?

So, I have a tendency to get groundhogs (usually one groundhog at a time) beneath my shed. Usually, I trap the groundhog with a Havahart cage and then drive it somewhere far away and release it. It usually takes several months then before another groundhog moves in and I repeat the same process. Of course, I assume that it is, in fact, another groundhog, especially because I believe I take the groundhogs I trap out pretty far, far enough to be unable to find their way back, but I just started wondering if it was possible that it could be the same one, or at least could have been the same one a few different times.

Let me go through my process and you can tell me what the likelihood is that I've trapped the same groundhog multiple times:

  1. I trap the animal in the HavaHart cage that I set up near the shed. Usually, I use fruit and/or vegetables to bait it.

  2. I pick up the animal in the cage and load it into the back of my SUV.

  3. I drive it out to a place that, according to my GPS, is a distance of 7.3 "driven" miles away from where I had trapped the animal. The distance between where I trapped it, and where I dropped it off "as the crow flies" is apparently 4.93 miles though.

It has been quite a little while since I started doing this, and I feel like I looked up something about how far to drop animals like this off to ensure they won't return, but it was so long ago that I don't remember if these distances are truly satisfactory.

What do you think?

Also, is there something I can do to ensure, apart from driving it somewhere farther away, that they will have a hard time returning?

I had heard that they dislike certain scents, and assuming that they use scent to navigate, would putting something that is distressing for a groundhog to smell (like onions) a good way to mess up their ability to navigate back home?

Thank you.
