Don't Know How To Proceed
I (kinda) met this girl through a dating app, and we ended up talking for a little over a month. Things started off really well and they kept going that way for the most part. We even went out on a date after only talking for 3 days, that was great, even kissed. Then she came over a few times and we’d watch movies together, and ended up cuddling until like 2 in the morning. Then between our “dates” we would call pretty much every night, most of the time falling asleep on call. But then one night, I forgot how the conversation initiated but she said that she never wanted to date ever again. At the moment I figured it wasn’t like a serious comment, she told me she had a really bad relationship prior to us talking and I thought that that was just what she was referring to. But to be sure I texted her the following day asking for sure what she meant. She told me that she didn’t want anything romantic or anything like a relationship at the moment. I was confused because then what had we been doing if not dating??? I’m okay if she wanted to take things slow, but I don’t think that's what she meant. She told me that she really loves having me in her life and that she wants me around forever and that also she wouldn’t just do the stuff we did with anybody. She said that she and I could have something really good someday, but that I also shouldn’t expect anything and that she didn’t want something expected of her either. She’s been through a lot and she was scared of me leaving her if one day she decided that she for sure didn’t want anything romantic, so I promised her I wouldn’t go anywhere and that I’d be there for. Admittedly it is hard for me to stay friends with someone who I view in a romantic sense, and I told her that, but that I was also willing to try.
A few days later, after really thinking about this whole thing, I decided that I couldn’t realistically stay, I can’t hold onto a maybe forever, and I only liked her more and more each day, so I knew that it would hurt me if nothing ever happened between us. So I cut things off before it could ever get to that point. I told her that I really valued the time we spent together and that she would always mean a lot to me but that we should go our separate ways. She kinda flipped out on me after that, she was being hurtful, and it was clear that she was really mad about me just walking out. I do feel really shitty for lying and breaking that promise, but I had hoped she would be a little more understanding as she usually was when I opened up to her. I don’t know how I was supposed to read what she and I did as anything other than romantic but apparently to her none of it really meant anything, and that those kisses were only that, kisses, nothing more. I was shocked more than anything, that she reacted like that, but in the days that followed it all just began to hurt more and more.
Two weeks go by, she and I are not talking at all, but this sense of contrition just began building up inside of me, I felt guilty as all hell, for breaking that promise, and more importantly her trust. It was just eating away at me until I couldn’t take anymore. So the other day I texted her, telling her that I did feel sorry for having done what I did and that if she ever needed someone to talk to, if things ever got too much, she could still come to me, even if we weren’t exactly friends. Like I said, she deals with a lot of shit, and her life is far from easy. I know someone else’s mental health isn’t my responsibility, but I have the ability to help someone, shouldn’t I do it? No matter what? She responded telling me that she was really angry at me for leaving and that she never expected something like that from me of all people, because I was like the one person who really got her or that she could confide in. I now understood where she was coming from when she kinda flipped out. She told me that she did really value me and that she missed having someone to be that close with and that she wanted to be friends again, if I wanted that also. It never struck me that I might’ve hurt her as much as I did, but I feel physically sick to my stomach that I made her feel that way.
She’s really grown to mean a lot to me, in such a short amount of time, and I want something with her, and I think she wants something with me, she doesn’t know what. I don’t know what to do, or if maybe she’s manipulating me? Or just using me? Maybe I’m being dramatic, I just feel miserable. Please Help!
TL;DR: I met a girl on a dating app and we talked for a little over a month. Things felt very romantic, we went on dates, kissed, cuddled, and talked every night, often falling asleep on call. Then she suddenly told me she didn't want a relationship or anything romantic, though she said I meant a lot to her, wanted me in her life forever, and that maybe something could happen someday, but I shouldn't expect anything. I realized I couldn't wait around for a "maybe," so I ended things, despite previously promising I wouldn't leave. She reacted angrily and said I hurt and betrayed her. After two weeks apart, guilt drove me to apologize and tell her she could still reach out if she needed support. She told me she missed me, was deeply hurt by me leaving, and wanted to be friends again because I was one of the only people she felt truly understood her. Now I'm torn because I care about her a lot and think she cares about me too, but she doesn't know what she wants. I'm struggling with guilt and wondering whether she's unintentionally using me or manipulating me, or if I'm just overthinking everything.
