[TOMT][MOVIE][2000s/2010s] girl saves money in a heart-shaped pillow, dad leaves family for male music teacher, works styling mannequins at a thrift store
I’m trying to find an American movie I watched years ago, probably from the late 2000s or early 2010s.
The main character is a blonde teenage girl who is finishing high school and lives in a small town with her mom and brother. Her family is struggling financially because her dad left after he was caught having an affair with the male music teacher and later came out as gay. The dad ends up living with the music teacher.
The girl dreams of getting out of town and going to college. She works at a thrift/secondhand store where she styles outfits on mannequins and creates window displays. I remember the store owner was Black and was supportive of her.
One of the biggest scenes I remember is that she saves money in a pink heart-shaped pillow with a zipper on her bed because she wants to leave town. Her mom finds the money and uses it to pay bills because the family is struggling after the dad left. The girl gets extremely upset because that money was supposed to be her chance to get out of town and start her life.
At some point she goes to stay with her dad and his boyfriend for a while.
There is also a Mexican neighbor around her age. For most of the movie they don’t really know each other, but she sees him outside a lot and he often plays music. They mostly watch each other from a distance. Near the end of the movie they finally get together and sleep together.
The movie had a small-town, indie-drama feel. It may have been a Lifetime-type movie, or independent film.
Does anyone know what movie this is?
One more detail I just remembered:
I think the opening scene showed a newspaper article (or newspaper clipping) on the family’s refrigerator. The article was about the girl’s father and the male music teacher being caught together at school. The affair had become public, and that’s how everyone found out. The father later came out as gay and moved in with the music teacher.
