CANTON - Police in Canton are seeking the public's help in finding a couple whose dog attacked a Chihuahua mix, leading to its euthanization, Chief Christopher Arciero said.

The two dogs were at the Canton Dog Park Friday with their respective owners, when one of the dogs, a brown pit bull who was with a couple who appeared to be in their 20s or 30s, attacked the other, a Chihuahua-terrier mix, Arciero said.

The smaller dog was seriously injured and taken to a nearby veterinarian but the decision was made to euthanize the animal, the chief said.

Animal control officers from Burlington and Canton and police now are looking for the owners of the pit bull, Arciero said.

"There were people at the dog park but no one saw anything out of the ordinary," he said. "The cameras at the park weren't working."

The chief said the department is hoping to bring closure to the owner of the smaller dog. "We have no other leads at this point other than the description of the owners of the pit bull," he said.

Animal control officers in Burlington and Canton, who work together, will be patrolling the park more often, he said.

Arciero is asking anyone who may have information to call, he said, and "any information would be helpful."
