Can uncontrollable rage be a side effect?

I hope this is okay to ask here, I'm desperate and need to hear others' experience. My husband started Zoloft about 5 weeks ago. At first he had no side effects. Last week he was in an unusually good and calm mood. Then this week he's turned into the Hulk, or Mr Hyde. I don't know if it's the meds but it seems worth checking.

He's 42, also taking Vyvanse, metformin, losartan, and rosuvastatin. He didn't have side effects from any of these, which he's been taking over a year. He was diagnosed with depression a year ago and finally decided to try Zoloft for it.

If you want the whole story for context, here's the long version. If not, feel free to skip to the replies section:

He's always had a temper and is generally a cranky old man type, even when he was young. But his temper is not generally directed at others and never at his family. Then two nights ago our daughter (8 with ADHD) was having a fit about taking a shower and I asked him for help. He had been playing a game on his computer, seemingly in a pretty neutral mood. Like a bomb going off suddenly, he slammed his fists on his desk so hard I thought it would break, jumped over and grabbed our daughter by the shoulders and yelled in her face really REALLY loudly. She screamed and he actually slapped her on the face. I was shocked and impossibly angry and, after removing our daughter from the room and calming her down, came back and told him if he ever does something like that again I'll leave him. He doubled down, saying it was my fault because I escalated the situation and made her angry, and left him no choice. He was unable to see that what he did was wrong.

Since then he hasn't been home when the kids are up, which I think is the right choice. Yesterday I texted him to say I thought it could be the meds because I've never seen him like this. While he does have a temper, he's never done anything remotely like that before and for the first time since I've known him, I was scared of him. He admitted he did not feel in control of himself or his emotions and said it could be the meds. He asked his doctor who told him to stop taking Zoloft immediately and he'll follow up next week.

If it's not the meds I need to make some tough decisions. But if it could be the meds I want to get him the support he needs to get back to being himself. Which is where this long post comes in, because I feel really lost and scared right now.
