I have only basic knowledge of the existing lore from the YouTube series so excuse my ignorance if some of these may be obvious or already noted, but here's how I read some aspects of the film in my 2nd viewing. (if TLDR check bullets 3 & 4 🙏)

**1.** Clark's roleplaying dialogue takes on its second meaning in the backrooms: "I'm sorry I broke the glass... I was checking inventory... etc." Glass/window/threshold/null zone being broken = Clark retreating further into his own echo chamber/loneliness/addictive or toxic personality (the backrooms labyrinth), i.e., crossing a threshold he should not. The irony being that Mary's therapyspeak literally instructs him to "open the window within."

Also, checking inventory = he is literally taking stock of all there is in the backrooms, obsessively. This effort occupies him but as a pursuit it means nothing, the inventory is infinite, emphasizing again the backrooms as escapism. (I think most of this is obvious but I didn't catch it on first watch.)

**2.** Mary's keepsake of her (or her mother's?) handprint is a literal representation of the notion that places have memory, or that places can literally remember: The concrete is forever marked with her impression. She chooses this as the perfect object for her to also remember that place (her house which no longer exists) as opposed to, say, something like a picture or maybe a gift from her mother.

She uses this to break free from Pirate Clark, in a sort of inversion of symbols: A place (the backrooms) misremembering a person (Clark) clashes with a person's (Mary's) memory of a place. Ultimately, the stone shatters and Pirate Clark is killed(?), and this memory-dynamic between person and place returns to some equilibrium, metaphorically speaking, at least.

It is unclear if the stone breaking has also meant Mary's release from her childhood trauma.

**3.** The descending montage of Mary's childhood home's living room: Of course all of the room's features devolve and disappear until all we see is an empty room with no doors, window, exit, or entry and we imagine it now existing in a void, a non-place, where no one could know it was there.

Then the next layer: First a small doorway occurs, then the doorway becomes substantial, askew in the corner. From nowhere it has become connected to a place.

This montage shows the process of not only how a room or space becomes a backroom but how it becomes *absorbed* into the preexisting backrooms. Once it is fully misremembered, it exists in an inaccessible limbo until some access point (doorway) is also misremembered. At which point it can be accessed somewhere from the existing backrooms labyrinth.

This could suggest that the nature of the backrooms is to ultimately merge into the amalgamated rooms, rather than exist in isolation, which is its initial form.

**4.** This tracks with a nod to **Conway's Game of Life** (I believe it was on Phil's shirt in the scene in his home), wherein a cell's existence is determined by its proximity to other cells, a simple premise in which discrete patterns and configurations emerge. Those patterns which are static are called still lifes.
