Is Synology a suitable solution for my office problem?
Hi everyone, I'm new to this sub. I work in software development but I'm venturing into general IT work. Here's the situation:
A company has 4 or 5 PCs in an office. Currently, they use one PC to share a folder with everyone else (like a server). They're having trouble restricting file sharing (they need to restrict access to certain files/folders, by role, etc.). One of the key requirements, in addition to sharing them in the office, is that one of the owners needs to be able to work remotely with these files. That is, besides sharing them in the office, they need the ability to work on them from home. They have approximately 3GB of files, which isn't very large. They mostly work with Office files, including many calculations in Excel, .XLSX FORMAT, historical data, etc., and PDF files.
While exploring solutions, I came across something completely new to me: the Synology NAS. I've never done networking work like this before, so I'd like to consult with those who know about it. I'm ruling out Google Workspace since they use Outlook.
Specifically, I saw the DS223j model with two bays. I'm considering using it for local sharing, but is it a suitable solution for the cloud storage they need? Or should I look at another alternative? Are there any considerations I might be overlooking?
Also, what would the cloud workflow be like with the Synology? Can I work directly by editing the file with the official Office suite? Or do I have to go through the entire process of downloading, editing, and re-uploading it? (We're trying to avoid those steps.)
Ty since now.
