Claude Mythos and Fable 5 just got banned and the reason makes absolutley no sense.

Rant

The U.S. government ordered Anthropic yesturday to cut off public access, citing national security concerns about the models being used for software hacks.

According to this letter that Anthropic released, a universal jailbreak would allow Mythos to be used without its safety protocols, which Anthropic does not believe has happened, but is possible for any model.

They stated verbal evidence of a narrow jailbreak, which consists of finding security vulnerabilities in software by asking Mythos to scan a code base and fix security bugs.

Anthropic stated at the end of the article they believe this to be a misunderstanding, I use Opus 4.8 on a daily basis and this seems like normal usssge of the model, so I’m curious why this would be different from capabilities that already exist with previous models…

Just this week, I was using a note taking software that’s an Electron based application, similar to Obsidisn. The front end contains a bug that caused it to crash when trying to load links that no longer exist, and since the original developer doesn’t maintain it anymore, I asked Opus 4.8 to fix the bug, there was an error in the state handling logic of a fetch call that assumed stats would always be retuned and cased it to crash, Opus fixed it in a few minutes and I was back to my note taking.

That sounds like the same kind of use case Anthropic says the government cited as the reason for them to shut down Mythos, needless to say I think we all want more answers...
