Tips on less traditional bass playing

Sup yall fellow bassist, recently me and a drummer i know started a band (with also a keyboardist) to play complex stuff inspired by Meshuggah's djent style, so I slapped an overdrive and handled a pick for good.

My role is to substitute the guitarist with bass (i have a 5er tuned ADCGF). Since we aren't that brave we decided to keep the lead (me) and the drums in the same tempo (we wrote part of a song that uses several tempos like 13/8 10/8 and 12/8).

I wanted to ask for some tips to get that chugging percussive sound Meshuggah has in songs like "Do not look down" or "broken cog".

Thanks y'all, i was thinking about getting an octaver, could that help?
