Indian immigrant here. Have I just been lucky to not face hostility?
I moved to Canada about 10 years ago through the Express Entry program and have been a citizen for 5 years.
I have a regular corporate job, a wife, and a young child, volunteer in my community, and live in a pretty mixed neighbourhood rather than one dominated by any one ethnicity.
With all the discussion lately around immigration and frustration with the large influx of Indian newcomers, I sometimes wonder whether my experience is unusual.
Personally, I haven't really experienced much negativity in day-to-day life. My friends and coworkers come from all kinds of backgrounds, my neighbours are great, and whenever I'm out with my daughter everyone is friendly. I'm sure people may have opinions they don't express to my face, but that's impossible to know.
So I'm genuinely curious: have I simply been fortunate, or is it that if you integrate reasonably well, participate in your community, and treat people respectfully, most Canadians judge you as an individual rather than by where you're from?
I'm not trying to start a political debate or deny that others have had different experiences. I'm just interested in hearing perspectives from both immigrants and people born here, because my own experience has been overwhelmingly positive despite the rhetoric I often see online.
