Did Nintendo make a mistake getting Donkey Kong Bananza out before 3D Mario?

Since it’s been revealed DKB was made by the same team who’s supposed to make the next 3D Mario, everyone’s anticipating 3D Mario to come out much later. The thing is there’s so many fans that still want the 3D Mario to release ASAP since it’s going to be almost a decade since the last one came out. Was Nintendo expecting Donkey Kong would appease the 3D Mario fans? If so, why did it seemingly not work?
