What happens to JD if he got a lawyer and refused to help the girls?

Hal was basically being biased because JD stole the girls money and was a wise ass without taking responsibility for any of it, what would happen if JD just got his lawyer and told Hal that he refused to help for any reason and did his time with a harassment lawsuit against Hal?

JD didn't have to help anyone and Hal couldn't force him under threat such a stupid character Hal was.
