I've been reading through the Dental Council of India's MDS Course Regulations and a recent government statement in Parliament, and it raised a question I can't find a clear answer to. Posting here because I'd like people who actually know the regulatory side to push back or correct me.

Here's what I found, from official sources only:

In December 2025, the Health Ministry answered a Rajya Sabha question (USQ 1859) confirming that Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons trained under the DCI's MDS Regulations 2017 are permitted to perform surgical procedures within the cranio-maxillofacial region, and described that training as "extensive" and "recognized."

The DCI's own curriculum defines the OMFS specialty as dealing with "the diagnosis and management of the diseases of stomatognathic system, jaw bones, cranio-maxillofacial region, salivary glands and temporomandibular joints."

What struck me is that surgery never stands alone — to operate on a region you also need diagnosis, pathology, radiology, medical management, reconstruction and rehabilitation. And in dentistry each of those is its own MDS branch:

Oral Medicine & Radiology → clinical and radiological diagnosis

Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology → pathological diagnosis

Prosthodontics → reconstruction and rehabilitation

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery → surgery

So the whole discipline seems organised, branch by branch, around the same anatomical region — the head, neck and face.

My question: if the documented scope is the cranio-maxillofacial region, does the title "Dental" fully communicate that scope — to patients, employers, policymakers? And if there's a good reason it's named the way it is, I'd genuinely like to know what that rationale is.

To be clear about what I'm not arguing: I'm not saying a BDS/MDS equals an MBBS or any other degree, not arguing for expanded legal scope, and not claiming superiority over any profession. Purely a question about whether the nomenclature matches the documented training scope.

Happy to be corrected if I'm misreading the regulations.

Genuine question about Indian dental degrees: does the name "Dental" match what the curriculum actually covers?
