Fragrant Branch of Yore

I have tried this item in 2 different places in Lost Bastille, on the way to to the sentinel bosses, and the merchant guy. I am so confused, it lets me "use" the item on the statue, but then nothing happens. I am stuck in Lost Bastille because of this. Can anybody give advice?
